Report: VP Binay's PDP-Laban Eyes Local Alliances For 2013 Polls
The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas Bayan (PDP-Laban) party of Vice President Jejomar Binay is eyeing strengthening local coalitions in gearing up for the 2013 elections.
PDP-Laban secretary general Jose "Joey" de Venecia III also belied reports the party may form a coalition with the ruling Liberal Party (LP) of President Benigno Aquino III.
“For us, it is too early to discuss coalitions with national political parties, especially that we are over a year away from the campaign period,” De Venecia said at a gathering of PDP-Laban leaders in Bacolod City, according to a report on news site Visayan Daily Star.
He referred to earlier reports quoting presidential political affairs adviser Ronald Llamas as saying there could be a possible coalition between the LP and PDP-Laban, for the May 2013 midterm polls.
Vice President Binay chairs the PDP-Laban while Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III is the party president.
In the 2010 vice presidential race, Binay nosed out LP bet Manuel Roxas II. Roxas is now transportation secretary.
"We are more interested in local alliances. We feel that down here it would be easier, to be able to expand our political party," De Venecia said.
