11 Killed As Magnitude 6.9 Quake Strikes Off Negros
MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 8, 6:25 p.m.) A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off Negros Monday morning, killing at least 11, according to Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, News5 reported.
Degamo also said they are checking reports that 29 more persons are missing.
Benito Ramos, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Coordinating Council, said of the seven reported fatalities, five have yet to be identified.
Nine-year-old Bernadette Raidan was pinned to death after a wall of the Matuog Elementary School collapsed on her during the quake.
Also killed was Anafe Estrabella, 11, who was also pinned by a collapsed wall of a chapel in Barangay Mompong, Jimalalud.
